Roger Roessler Wines
I was particularly thrilled to learn that Roger Roessler had opened another winery. We fell in love (with a capital L) with Roessler’s wine some years ago, and we were bummed when the winery (and name) were sold in 2010. We are happy to report that his new winery is just as sensational as the former Roessler Winery.
The winery is all about crafting wine from small artisan vineyards, primarily Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast. His love affair with the area is most evident in his Black Pine Pinot Noir, an inky dark nectar redolent of cherries and spice. The winery is also venturing into Rhone-style wine production, another love of Mr. Roessler primarily for their food-friendliness, easy-drinking, and easier on the wallet.
It’s no secret that I love Pinot Noir wines. Roger Roessler’s bold Pinot Noir wines, rich with dark cherry and plum overtones, whet my appetite to learn and sample more of this wonderful grape. Like the Shea Vineyard (one of my all-time favorites), some of the wines are no longer available. But, we were intrigued by some of his new wines, the aforementioned Black Pine, which we could quickly grow to love.
The new winery is just as cozy, intimate, and inviting as their former home. For those wishing to catch a few rays, they have a lovely outside patio to loll away the day. Ethan, our knowledgeable wine host, guided us smoothly through the tasting menus, extolling the wines that should be extolled. We were particularly partial to the Vin Blancs, a blend of Viognier, Marsanne, and Rousanne; an excellent way to introduce yourself to white Rhone wines. All in all, it was a wonderful way to while away a late summer afternoon reconnecting with an old friend.
Visit Roessler at 654 Broadway, Sonoma, CA 95476 (close to Sonoma Plaza). Appointments are required so call (707) 933-1330 to arrange or checkout www.rogerroesslerwines.com for more details.
